Our Own Recipe
Many of our customers have never thought of making their own pizza and ask for suggestions. If you are a home chef, you’ll want to try Mama Irma’s pizza dough recipe at the link below. For those less adventurous but still desiring a tasty pizza at home, you can use toasted French bread, pre-packaged pizza crust products, or frozen, refrigerated, or fresh dough products found at most supermarkets. Start with a generous layer of Robusto Bold Gourmet Pizza Sauce and add your favorite toppings—it’s that easy! It’s also great for dipping breadsticks and as an hors d’ouvres topper.
Mama Irma's Pizza Dough
Makes 5 Pizza's
9 Cups of better for bread flour
4 Cups of warm water (100-110°F)
1 ½ packages of dry yeast
2 Tablespoons sugar
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 Tablespoon salt
Mixing the dough: First, place the yeast and 1 table spoon of sugar in large bowl then add the 4 cups of warm water. Allow yeast to start foaming. Add oil, flour, remaining sugar and salt. Stir it all in then work the dough so it is well mixed. Form a ball, spread olive oil on the top then cover with plastic wrap and a cloth towel. Let rise for three hours at room temperature or slightly warmer (80-85°F).
Rolling out the dough: First, flour your counter or table top. Use a rolling pin (flour the rolling pin) and roll out the dough to cover the size of the pizza pan. Sprinkle flour as needed to keep the dough from sticking to rolling pin and the counter. This dough is fairly dense so it can be rolled thin and still support lots of toppings. Sprinkle corn meal on the pizza pan before transferring the dough onto the pan; this will keep the dough from sticking to the pizza pan.
Building the pizza: Once the dough is on the pizza pan, Mama Irma and Papa Jim like to layer the Robusto Bold Gourmet Pizza Sauce first. Then they sprinkle grated Romano and Parmesan cheese to cover the Robusto Pizza Sauce. After that, they place sliced pepperoni, browned ground beef and sliced mushrooms. They top it all off with a generous layer of shredded Mozzarella cheese. You can use any topping combination to suit your tastes.
Baking the pizza: Preheat the oven to 425°F and bake for 20 minutes or until the crust and cheese are golden brown. For a crunchy crust, make sure the oven rack is at the bottom setting.
